I represent startups, growth-stage companies, and small-to-mid-size businesses through every stage — formation to exit — and serve as full-service entertainment counsel across music, film, television, and more. Engage me by the hour for a single matter, or as fractional general counsel for ongoing support

Joe Anderson, Venice Beach lawyer

About

For decades, I've represented startups, growth-stage companies, and small-to-mid-size businesses through every stage of their life — from formation, through financing and day-to-day operations, to an eventual sale or exit. Alongside that corporate practice, I've built a full-service entertainment law practice representing clients across music, film, and television — and, to a lesser extent, theater and literary work — handling everything from recording and publishing deals to production agreements, NIL contracts, and copyright and trademark matters.

I've also been the founder in the room, not just the lawyer in it. I co-founded BookheadEd Learning / StudySync, serving as its General Counsel through more than $5 million in financing and an eventual $85 million exit, and I founded and led Reflex Protect as CEO and General Counsel through product development, financing, a Covid-era pivot, and a Delaware C-corp conversion — earning a 2021 Forbes Next 1000 recognition along the way. On the entertainment side, I've also worked directly as a record producer and a film and television producer.

That combination — deep transactional experience plus first-hand experience as a founder, producer, and operator — is what I bring to every engagement, whether it's a single contract or an ongoing counsel relationship.

HOW TO WORK WITH ME

Most engagements are billed simply, by the hour — a single contract, a negotiation, a one-off legal question, or representation through a specific transaction or matter. That's the most common way clients work with me, and it requires no ongoing commitment, just a retainer agreement in place describing the parameters of the representation.

For companies that want more consistent, ongoing access — ready availability for legal questions, regular contract review, or someone who effectively functions as part of the leadership team — I also offer fractional General Counsel arrangements, ranging from light, on-call support to a fully embedded, dedicated relationship. Every retainer covers the same full range of services described above, and I can also identify, brief, and manage specialized outside counsel (tax, patent, litigation) when a matter calls for it, so you always have a single point of contact.

Whether you need a single contract reviewed or a long-term legal partner, let's talk about what makes sense for you.
